Dream-Folk artist Chris Cleverley brings his groundbreaking new sound to The Lake District on his UK Headline Tour
Emerging Dream-Folk songwriter Chris Cleverley is among a new wave of pioneering artists carving an uncharted path through the UK acoustic landscape. His latest album ‘Broadcast The Secret Verse’ showcases an unprecedented new sound combining elements of Lo-Fi Folk, Ambient and Dream-Pop music, ushering in a bold new artistic era as he takes to the road for his seven-date Autumn UK headline tour.
The album has made waves, with RnR Magazine calling it “a masterpiece – ★★★★” and Americana UK describing it as “One of the best albums of 2022 – 9/10”, leading to receipt of FATEA Magazine’s ‘Male Artist of 2023 and inclusion in The Daily Star ‘50 artists to watch in 2023’’. Its vibrant, uplifting feel recalls the Indie greats Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridgers & Elliott Smith, while echoes of Aphex Twin and Jóhann Jóhannsson reflect eclectic electronic influences.
This bold experimentation is underpinned by Cleverley’s characteristically intricate fingerstyle guitar techniques, bridging the gap between his contemporary songwriting and the 60s Folk Revival spirit of artists like Joni Mitchell and John Martyn, which runs through his music. It is this playing style for which his live performance is renowned and that which he will champion on this tour, as he brings intimate stripped-back arrangements of his new material to The Gather in Ennerdale this Autumn.
Cleverley has had a strong affinity with Cumbria throughout his career, touring and recording with his Fylde Falstaff guitar, handmade locally by luthier Roger Bucknall in Penrith. This November sees his first appearance at Ennerdale’s iconic community-run venue The Gather, which is also host to herb workshops and locally-sourced produce.
Fresh from highly regarded performances at this Summer’s Cambridge & Manchester Folk Festivals, audiences can catch Chris up close and personal in the pin-drop silence of this intimate venue, soaking in his expert musicianship as well as the deep thoughtfulness of his storytelling. With diverse songwriting touching on subjects from mass displacement of people and pervasive artificial intelligence to deep connections with the natural world, his performance is said to bring the calming aura of a group meditation. With his renowned warmth and humour leaving audiences feeling wholesome and restored, this special evening promises to be the perfect antidote to our head-spinning modern age.
