Lancashire artist’s solo exhibition in March

An exhibition in Preston, of uplifting textile art created by retired hospital consultant Aruna, who lives in Bolton, will display vibrant exotic fabric collages on canvas and other beautiful creations from recycled textiles and fabric scraps. All profits to charities.

Through her art, recently Aruna wants to highlight the damaging effects of textile and fabric waste. Using purely recycled fabrics, she has developed her own technique of using heat, bonding the fabric scraps to the canvas.

Aruna, who has organised workshops on rag rugs and has a fabric collage workshop planned for the future, has produced a series called ‘Beauty under the microscope’ based on images in histopathology. Four of these are hanging in RoyalBlackburn Hospital. When Prof Mary Sheppard was at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Londonshe commissioned Aruna to produce three collages on Cardiac Pathology, which now hang in St George’s Hospital, London.

One of the landscape images TEM (Transmission Elecron Microscopy) of the common cold virus in nasal epithelium, appeared on the cover of The Bulletin of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2009. An image of her non-medical fabric collage ‘Tree of Life’ appeared on the cover of Gut, a journal of gastroenterologists. There were write ups about her work in the BMJ insight publication.

Aruna volunteers in a school in a deprived part of Bolton where she runs fabric collage workshops, inspiring a whole new generation. As a public speaker Aruna speaks passionately about her art to the WI, Rotary and Embroiderers Guild to name but a few. All profits from her sales go to charities in the UK and India including Bolton Hospice and Jagruti Centre.
