Visual Impairment Awareness Training

As part of National Eye Health Week, Galloways are providing Visual Impairment Awareness Training sessions across the North West.

Did you know that more than 2 million people in the UK are living with sight loss? For many organisations, knowing how to provide inclusive and accessible services can make a huge difference. That’s where our Visual Impairment Awareness Training comes in.

This interactive session gives you the chance to step into the shoes of blind and partially sighted people, challenge misconceptions, and learn practical skills that help create a more welcoming environment for all. It goes beyond compliance—it’s about building empathy and embedding accessibility into everyday practice.

What to Expect

Our training combines expert guidance, real-life experiences, and hands-on activities using simulation spectacles (sim specs) to provide a unique insight into sight loss. You’ll learn:

  • How to safely and confidently guide someone with a visual impairment.

  • Communication strategies for respectful and effective interactions.

  • The impact of different eye conditions and how to address challenges.

  • Practical steps to remove barriers and meet accessibility standards.

Why Choose Galloways?

With over 150 years of experience supporting blind and partially sighted people across Lancashire and Sefton, Galloways is trusted by businesses, schools, and community organisations. Our visual impairment awareness training reflects this heritage, blending professional knowledge with lived experience. We invite Lived Experience Volunteers as guest speakers to our sessions so you can hear directly from the people affected by sight loss, and a large number of our staff team have lived experience of being blind or partially sighted.

Don’t just take our word for it—one attendee recently said:

“This course opened my eyes to how I can make a difference.”
