Margaret’s crafty creations raise CancerCare funds in Lancaster

A prolific fundraiser who has created countless hand-crafted items for CancerCare in recent years has been honoured for her efforts.

Margaret Goodridge, 85, a retired Infants’ School Headteacher from Bare in Morecambe, makes everything from aprons to dolls’ clothes and sells them to raise money for CancerCare.

In 2018 alone Margaret raised £400 to help local people affected by cancer. The amount will enable CancerCare to provide a series of counselling sessions for a local child or adult who is facing cancer.

Margaret, who was born in Norwich and was Head of Skerton Infants’ School for 17 years, said: “I appreciate all that CancerCare has done for me.

“I was diagnosed with cancer 12 years ago. I joined CancerCare’s crafts class. We never stopped laughing from the start of one session to the finish. I made a lot of friends there. When I stopped going to the crafts class I started coming to the monthly coffee mornings.

“I have always made things since I was a little child. My mother was a tailor so I think it must have been genetic!

“I started making things for CancerCare when I joined the crafts class. I make seasonal things like Easter baskets and Christmas decorations as well as aprons. I specialise in dolls clothes. I wanted to do something a little different.

“I also go to the Breast Cancer Support Group once a month.”

Neil Townsend, Chief Executive of CancerCare, presented Margaret with a bunch of flowers at a recent coffee morning at CancerCare’s Slynedales centre on Slyne Road in Lancaster.

Neil said: “Margaret is an amazing example of someone who quietly makes lots of little things to raise funds to help people with cancer.

“Her efforts don’t go unnoticed by our team. She is a very, very special lady.”
